We are now living in a world where people tend to chase individuality more than ever before. Fashion clothes is one of the factors they care about to pursue their individuality and personal characteristics. Therefore more people agree with the saying that “you are what you wear.” However, compared with the sustanibility in the fashion industry, you are what you wear matters less.
Fashion industry has indeed brought huge economic benefits for the whole world. Take the fast fashion giant — H&M as an example, it has almost 4,000 stores worldwide and earned over $25 billion in sales in 2015. However, according to H&M’s development sustainability manage, only 0.1 percent of all clothing collected by charities and take-back programs is recycled into new textile fiber.
We’re still deeply influenced by our disposable culture. And with the development of fast-changing trend and low cost of manufacturing, most of us tend to throw things away without a second thought. Most people just throw our clothes into the trash without a second thought. With more and more rubish produced, we’re confronting with a waste crisis, one of the reasons of which comes from waste clothes.
Sometimes waste production goes just in a vicious circle. When you find yourself attractive in good clothes which makes you look attractive and handsom, you would want to buy more. And as you buy more clothes, you need more wardrobes and bigger house. And all may become in vain one day which will end in a stack of waste. According to relevant statistics, each year we produce 3 percent more waste than the year before. However, our resouces become ever more scarce and the need to recyle existing materials is becoming increasingly necessary but most of them finnaly turn into huge landfills, which are posing a serious threat to human health and the environment.
Everyone can actively start to make up for their wrong deeds damaging our environment. You can choose to cherish and repair your clothe much more. You can learn to gradaully change some of your shopping habits in the future, to save resources for our future generations. You can choose to buy more good quality long-lasting clothes.
