We are fallible and must cut each other slack, because we know even the people most committed to our well-being will let us down. "Bearing with one another, and forgiving" (Col. 3:13 NKJV), God calls us to follow His example as we build intimate relationships in this sinful, imperfect world. " And be kind to one another, tender, hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you”(Eph. 4:32 NKJV).
The depth of the marital and sexual relationship over a lifetime brings out feelings and hurts that the individuals did not know could be experienced. Our mate can feel like the enemy many times, and forgiveness becomes huge in maintaining passionate intimacy. Being gracious and letting go of hurts is not an easy discipline.
A genuine part of maturity is learning to live with all the ambiguity of human error and disappointed expectations.It is not by accident that Scripture encourages people to lovingly give each other the benefit of the doubt and learn to live the gentle life: "Therefore as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. "Bear with each other and forgive."(Col. 3:12-13 Nivf emphasis added).
So many love lives are compromised and sabotaged by a lack of forgiveness. Sexual lovemaking is fraught with potential messes and hurt feelings. Bear with each other, cut slack, let go of hurt and resentment. Life is never perfect, but it is amazing how our positive and mature approach to it can make a difference. Mates won't always climax at the right times and places, or have matching desires and never hurt each other's feelings. It’s about living forgiveness.
